The determiner corresponding to English 'this, that' has the following shapes:

Singular:


1. ce occurs before masculine singular beginning with a consonant:

ce restaurant this restaurant
ce monsieur this gentleman


2. cet occurs before masculine singular nouns beginning with a vowel (or the silent consonant h):

French / Français English / Anglais
cet enfant this child
cet hôtel this hotel


3. cette occurs before aIl feminine singular nouns (Notice the identical pronunciation of cet and cette.)

cette malle this trunk
cette femme this woman
cette amie this friend


Plural:

ces occurs in front of all plural nouns:

ces restaurants these restaurants
ces enfants these children
ces malles these trunks

Synthesis:

Singular Plural
Ce restaurant est bon. Ces restaurants sont bons.
