Lesson 7 - Grammar 1 - Adjectives - Part one - Forms
We call adjectives words that modify nouns or pronouns (we are only going to study adjectives introduced in the text up to now.)
In English, adjectives have only one shape. In French, they usually have four:
- Two for the singular (masculine & feminine).
- Two for the plural (masculine &feminine).
1. Number
Plural of most French adjectives is formed by adding an -s to the singular form.
Singular / Singulier | Plural / Pluriel |
---|---|
le petit magasin | les petits magasins |
la grande route | les grandes routes |
Adjectives ending in s or x in the singular do not change in the plural.
Singular / Singulier | Plural / Pluriel |
---|---|
le vieux magasin (old) | les vieux magasins |
le mauvais hôtel | les mauvais hôtels |
Adjectives ending in eau in the masculine singular add an x to form the masculine plural.
Singular / Singulier | Plural / Pluriel |
---|---|
le nouveau magasin | les nouveaux magasins |
le beau livre | les beaux livres |
2. Gender
Most adjectives have a different form depending on whether they modify a masculine or a feminine noun.
In general the feminine form is obtained by adding an e to the masculine form.
Masculine / Masculin | Feminine / Féminin |
---|---|
un petit paquet | une petite valise |
un joli modèle | une jolie route |
Note 1: If the adjective ends with a vowel in the masculine, the pronunciation is the same for both forms.
Note 2: When adjectives end in e in the masculine form, there is no change in the feminine form.
Masculine / Masculin | Feminine / Féminin |
---|---|
un jeune employé | une jeune employée |
un autre boulanger | une autre pâtisserie |
un compartiment libre | une place libre |
un climat humide | une chambre humide |
Note 3: Adjectives ending in é follow the general rule and add an e in the feminine form.
Masculine / Masculin | Feminine / Féminin |
---|---|
un paquet recommandé | une lettre recommandée |
Also included in that category are the ordinal numbers formed by adding ième to the cardinal numbers.
Masculine / Masculin | Feminine / Féminin |
---|---|
le deuxième jour | la deuxième semaine |
le troisième matin | la troisième fois |
le quarante-cinquième mot | la quarante-cinquième question |
3. Special cases
Some adjectives do not fit in the preceding rules or they may present some other peculiarities.
a. When the masculine form ends in x, the feminine form will end in se.
Masculine / Masculin | Feminine / Féminin |
---|---|
Il est heureux. | Elle est heureuse. |
b. When the masculine form ends in ier, the feminine form will end in ière.
Masculine / Masculin | Feminine / Féminin |
---|---|
le premier étage | la première semaine |
le dernier jour | la dernière année |
c. When the masculine form ends in f, the feminine form will end in ve.
Masculine / Masculin | Feminine / Féminin |
---|---|
un manteau neuf (new) | une robe neuve |
d. Some adjectives have two shapes for the masculine singular: one is used before words beginning with a vowel, the other, before words beginning with a consonant.

---|---|---|---|---|
Singular / Singulier | Plural Pluriel | Singular / Singulier | Plural / Pluriel | |

Examples:
