All the above sentences, with which you are familiar, are in the ‘imparfait’ tense. In this chapter, we will study the conjugation and the use of the ‘imparfait’.
1. Conjugaison de l’imparfait
The ‘imparfait’ is formed by adding the following endings to the stem of the first person plural of the present tense. The endings for all ‘Imparfait’ forms are:

Only one verb in the French language offers any irregularity in the stem: the verb ‘être’ has the special stem et-.

2. Usages de l'imparfait (how to use Imperfect)
The ‘imparfait’ is a past tense used:
a. To express a state of being.

b. To indicate that an action was repeated in the past, corresponding to the English 'used to' or 'would'.

c. To describe the setting of a situation at the time something happened.

f. Some verbs are almost always in the ‘imparfait’.

g. Verbs preceded by the following expressions are in the ‘Imparfait’, ‘Plus-que-parfait’, ‘Conditionnel’ and ‘Conditionnel passé’.

Notice that the ‘imparfait’ expresses facts that existed or happened in the past but without a limitation of time.
