Lesson 3 - Grammar 4 - Relative pronouns after a preposition
In this section, we will pursue the explanation started in grammar 3, lesson 3
Step 3 - 'qui' and 'que' after prepositions
When preceded by a preposition the relative pronoun will vary according to whether it refers to people or to things.
a. 'qui' or 'lequel'.
Examples/ Exemples: |
---|
C'est l'ami avec lequel j'ai voyagé. |
C'est l'ami avec qui j'ai voyagé. |
b. lequel
Examples/ Exemples: |
---|
Voilà le bureau sur lequel j’ai mis le livre. |
C'est l'avion par lequel il est arrivé. |
Notice that this relative pronoun agrees in gender and number (lequel, laquelle, lesquelles) like the noun marker ‘quel' studied in French for beginners, lesson 5, Grammar 1.
Also note that ‘que’ never occurs after a preposition.
