Lesson 3 - Grammar 5 - prepositions followed by interrogative pronouns
We saw in the French course for beginners, lesson 7, Grammar 4 a list of words that we called "question words".
Among those were qui (who, whom), que, quoi, qu’ (what) we call interrogative pronouns.

In this grammar point we will study the interrogative pronouns after prepositions.
- Qui is used for
people.

Avec qui va-t-il déjeuner? | With whom is he going to have lunch? |
- Quoi is used for
things.

Par quoi allez-vous commencer? | What are you going to start with? |
De quoi parliez-vous? | What were you talking about? |
Notice that ‘que’ is never used after a preposition.
