Lesson 5 - Dialogue : A l'aéroport (At the airport)

M. Dumas conduit M. Legrand à l'aéroport. C'est la première fois que M. Legrand prend l'avion. Mr. Dumas is driving Mr. Legrand to the airport. It is the first time that Mr. Legrand is taking a plane.
M. Dumas: Avez-vous confirmé votre départ? Have you confirmed your departure?
M. Legrand: Oui, avant-hier. Yes, the day before yesterday.
M. Dumas: Etes-vous certain de n'avoir rien oublié? Are you sure you haven't forgotten anything?
M. Legrand: J'ai vérifié avant de partir et tous mes papiers sont dans ma serviette. Mais, je m'aperçois que je n'aurai rien à lire dans l'avion. I checked before leaving and all of my papers are in my briefcase. But I notice I won't have anything to read on the plane.
M. Dumas: Ce n'est pas la peine que vous achetiez des journaux ou des magazines. Quand vous serez à bord, l'hôtesse de l'air vous en donnera. Don't bother to buy newspapers or magazines. When you are on board the stewardess will give you some.
(Ils arrivent à l'aéroport) (They arrive at the airport)
M. Legrand: Ce n'est pas un avion à réaction qu'on voit là-bas? Isn't that a jet plane we see over there?
M. Dumas: Lequel? Which one?
M. Legrand: Celui qui est près du hangar. The one near the hangar.
M. Dumas: Si, c'est un de ceux dont on vient d'annoncer la mise en service. C'est pour cela qu'on est en train de construire de nouvelles pistes. Yes, it's one of those they've just announced has been put into service. That's why they're in the midst of building new runways.
M. Legrand: J'ai entendu dire qu'on agrandissait l'aéroport. I heard that they were enlarging the airport.
(Où l'on rappelle certains souvenirs) (They reminisce)
M. Legrand: Vous étiez dans l'aviation pendant la guerre, n'est-ce pas? You were in the Air Force during the war, weren’t you?
M. Dumas: Oui, j'étais pilote. Yes, I was a pilot.
M. Legrand: Ne vous est-il jamais rien arrivé? Didn’t anything ever happen to you?
M. Dumas: Comme pilote, non. Mais l'armée dernière alors que j'étais passager, nous avons failli avoir un accident. Not as a pilot. But last year when I was a passenger, we almost had an accident.
M. Legrand: Que s'est-il passé? What happened?
M. Dumas: Un des moteurs a calé et nous avons dû atterrir d'urgence. One of the motors stalled and we had to make an emergency landing.
